L Carnitine
L carnitine is sold almost entirely on a fat loss claim, and that claim is the weakest thing about it. It has a clearer, quieter case elsewhere.
The fat loss claim
Carnitine transports fatty acids into the mitochondria to be burned, which sounds like a fat loss mechanism and is why it is marketed as one. The problem is that this step is not the bottleneck in healthy people, and muscle carnitine is difficult to raise through supplementation because uptake depends on insulin. Trials in people who are not deficient show little to no effect on body fat.
There is no authorised GB health claim for carnitine and weight loss, which tells you what the regulators made of the evidence.
Where the better case sits
The more interesting research is on recovery and muscle soreness after hard training, and on older adults, where carnitine status is lower and the picture is more favourable. Neither is dramatic, and neither is an authorised claim, so treat both as plausible rather than proven.
Forms and dose
Doses in the literature usually sit around 2g a day. L carnitine L tartrate is the form used in most exercise research. Acetyl L carnitine crosses into the brain more readily and is studied for different reasons. Plain L carnitine is the cheapest and the one in most liquids. Vegetarians and vegans have lower dietary intake, since red meat is the main source.
If your goal is body composition, the honest ranking is a calorie deficit first, then adequate protein, then training. Carnitine is well down that list, and the full shop has the things that do more.
Liquid or capsule
Liquids let you take a 2g dose in one go without swallowing several capsules, and they are usually cheaper per gram, which is why most of the research doses are easier to reach in liquid form. Capsules travel better and taste of nothing.
Whichever you choose, check the actual carnitine content per serving rather than the volume of the bottle or the weight of the capsule, because a large capsule of a carnitine blend can contain less than a small one of plain L carnitine. Every product here prints that figure.
