Optimum Nutrition

Optimum Nutrition is the reference point the rest of the protein market is priced against. Gold Standard 100% Whey is, by a distance, the most widely sold whey protein in the world, and that scale is not an accident of marketing alone. It mixes properly, it tastes acceptable across a lot of flavours, and the protein content per serving has been consistent for long enough that people stopped checking.

We stock three Optimum Nutrition products: the 4540 gram Gold Standard tub and the two Opti multivitamins. That is a deliberately narrow selection. These are the three items where the brand is genuinely the best answer on our shelves rather than simply a familiar name at a higher price.

Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard whey cost per serving compared against smaller tub sizes, alongside the Opti Men and Opti Women multivitamin positions

The Optimum Nutrition range we stock

Three products, and the pricing needs context to read properly.

Product What it is Category Price
Optimum Nutrition 100% Whey Gold Standard 4540 g The 4.54 kilogram tub, around 146 servings, whey isolate led blend protein £89.00
Optimum Nutrition Opti Women The equivalent multivitamin formulated for active women vitamins and minerals £43.00
Optimum Nutrition Opti Men A high dose multivitamin formulated for active men vitamins and minerals £43.00

Eighty nine pounds is the highest single price in this catalogue, and it is also close to the lowest cost per gram of protein. The 4540 gram tub holds roughly a hundred and forty six servings at the standard scoop, which works out at around sixty one pence per serving. Buying the same protein in nine hundred gram tubs typically costs half as much again per serving.

Choosing from the Optimum Nutrition range

With three Optimum Nutrition products this is a short decision, but each one has a condition attached that is worth stating plainly.

Buy the big tub only if you will finish it

The economics of the 4540 gram size are excellent and entirely conditional on getting through it. At one serving a day it lasts around five months, which is a long time to be committed to a single flavour. If you have never used a protein powder before, buy a smaller tub of something from the protein category first and find out whether you will actually drink it daily.

Opti Men and Opti Women are high dose products

These are not a gentle daily multivitamin. Both are formulated well above nutrient reference values on many components, on the reasoning that active people have higher turnover. That is a defensible position for some nutrients and a marketing position for others, and it matters if you are already taking standalone vitamins, because the totals stack.

If you already take a zinc or a vitamin D

Check the labels against each other before adding one of the Opti products. Duplication across several tubs is the most common way people end up at intakes they never intended, particularly with zinc and vitamin A. Our vitamins and minerals category covers where the sensible ceilings sit.

What is actually inside

Two Optimum Nutrition products, two very different formulation stories.

What makes Gold Standard what it is. The formula is an isolate led blend, meaning whey protein isolate appears first in the ingredient list with concentrate and often hydrolysed peptides behind it. Ingredients are declared by weight, so that ordering is a real piece of information rather than a claim. Isolate leading gives a higher protein percentage and less lactose than a concentrate only product, and the concentrate behind it keeps the cost and the texture reasonable. It is a sensible engineering compromise and most of the market has copied it.

What Gold Standard does not have is any magic beyond that. Whey is whey. A twenty four gram serving of protein from this tub and a twenty four gram serving from a competent concentrate will do the same thing for your muscle, and the difference you are paying for is lactose content, texture, flavour consistency and the fact that it dissolves in a shaker with no lumps. Those are real benefits. They are not physiological ones.

Reading a high dose multivitamin properly. Opti Men and Opti Women are built as broad spectrum products with amino acid and botanical additions layered on top of the vitamin and mineral base. The base is where the value is. The botanical extras are typically present at amounts well below what any study on those ingredients used, which is normal for a multivitamin and is worth knowing so you do not pay a premium expecting them to do anything.

The nutrients where the high dose approach is genuinely justified are the water soluble ones with wide safety margins, particularly the B vitamins and vitamin C. The ones to check against your other supplements are the fat soluble vitamins and the minerals, because those accumulate. The NHS guidance on vitamins and minerals lists where the upper intakes sit for the ones that matter.

Dosing and timing

Gold Standard servings are one scoop, delivering around twenty four grams of protein. Most people using it as their main supplement take one to two servings a day, and the useful rule is to treat it as a way of closing the gap between what you ate and what you needed rather than as a fixed ritual.

Total daily protein is the variable that matters. Spread across three to five feedings of roughly similar size, it does more than the same total taken in one enormous serving, and the timing relative to training is close to irrelevant once the daily total is right.

Opti Men and Opti Women are multi tablet daily servings rather than single tablets, which is how the high doses are delivered. That means the labelled amounts assume you take the full serving and are proportionally lower if you take fewer, which some people do deliberately to avoid stacking with other supplements.

Take both with food. Fat soluble vitamins absorb considerably better alongside a meal containing some fat, and a high dose multivitamin on an empty stomach is the most common cause of the nausea people blame on the product.

How Optimum Nutrition compares here

Against the rest of the catalogue, Optimum Nutrition wins on two specific things and loses on breadth.

Brand Strongest here Typical price position Best for
Optimum Nutrition Bulk whey economics, multivitamins Highest per tub, low per serving Buying protein in volume
Peak Protocol Breadth and single ingredient clarity Mid Building a stack from known doses
Extrifit Hydrolysed isolate, format choice Upper mid Lactose trouble or fast digestion
Czech Virus Multi source protein blends Upper mid Flavour and blended release
Chevron Nutrition Value whey and beef protein Lowest here A budget protein

If you want a protein you will not have to think about again for five months, this is the tub. If you want variety, a smaller commitment, or a dairy free option, look across the protein category first.

Labelling, testing and UK rules

Optimum Nutrition products sold in Great Britain carry the ingredient list, nutrition declaration and allergen statement required by the UK food labelling rules. On the whey the allergen line declares milk, and on the multivitamins it is worth reading the full list because botanical extracts occasionally sit alongside allergens people do not expect in a tablet.

Protein carries two authorised claims in the GB nutrition and health claims register, covering contribution to growth in muscle mass and to the maintenance of muscle mass. Vitamins and minerals carry a large number of authorised claims, each conditional on the product supplying a significant amount of the nutrient, which high dose multivitamins comfortably do.

That is why a multivitamin label can legitimately list a long series of function claims while a BCAA tub cannot list any. The difference is not marketing skill, it is that the vitamin claims were substantiated and put on the register.

For competitive athletes the separate question is batch contamination rather than formulation. UK Anti-Doping publishes guidance on supplement risk, and batch testing schemes such as Informed Sport exist because a clean formula and a clean batch are not the same statement.

Who it suits, and who should skip it

Optimum Nutrition suits the person who has settled into a routine and wants to stop making decisions. Buy the big tub twice a year, take a multivitamin, get on with training. There is a lot to be said for that and very little the rest of the market can add to it.

It suits people who have been let down by protein powders that clump, separate or taste synthetic. Manufacturing consistency at this scale is genuinely hard and it is most of what the premium buys.

It is the wrong fit if you want single ingredient clarity, if you are avoiding dairy, or if you would rather buy several smaller tubs and vary the flavour. It is also the wrong fit if you already take standalone vitamins, because the Opti products are dosed on the assumption that they are your only source.

Buying Optimum Nutrition in the UK

All three Optimum Nutrition products are held in UK stock and ship domestically. The 4540 gram tub is a heavy item and still ships on standard delivery, so there is no surcharge for the size.

Storage on a tub this large is worth a thought. Five months is long enough for repeated opening in a humid kitchen to affect texture, so keep the lid firmly on, keep the scoop dry and do not store it above a kettle. Clumping in whey is a moisture problem rather than a spoilage one, but it makes accurate scooping harder.

The multivitamin bottles are light sensitive in the way most tablet products are. A cupboard beats a windowsill.

Delivery timings and returns on unopened items are on shipping and returns, and payment options are on how to pay.

Common questions

Is Gold Standard whey worth eighty nine pounds?

Per serving, yes. The 4540 gram tub works out at roughly sixty one pence per twenty four gram protein serving, which is at the cheaper end of the market. The question is not the price, it is whether you will finish a five month supply of one flavour.

Is Gold Standard an isolate or a concentrate?

It is an isolate led blend, with whey protein isolate first in the ingredient list and concentrate behind it. Ingredients are declared in order of weight, so that ordering tells you the composition without needing the marketing.

What is the difference between Opti Men and Opti Women?

The vitamin and mineral profile is adjusted for different typical requirements, most notably iron, which Opti Women includes at a level reflecting menstrual losses and Opti Men generally does not. The rest of the differences are in the botanical and amino acid additions.

Can I take Opti Men alongside a separate vitamin D or zinc?

You can, but check the totals first. High dose multivitamins already supply substantial amounts of both, and stacking tubs is the commonest way people end up at intakes they never planned. Zinc and vitamin A are the two worth adding up carefully.

Does Gold Standard contain lactose?

A small amount. The isolate led formula removes most of it but not all, and the label declares milk as an allergen. If lactose is a genuine problem for you, a full hydrolysed isolate or a plant protein is the better answer.

Why do you only stock three Optimum Nutrition products?

Because these are the three where the brand is the best answer we can offer rather than a familiar name at a premium. For creatine, amino acids and most single ingredients, other brands here do the same job for less.
